Greg Medford and his cousin Steve spent many hours discussing various concepts for the knife. Greg’s requests were as reasonable as ever… “I want the largest blade-to-handle ratio in the industry, minimal backlash with maximum reliability, a new way to lock the blade, no attachments, great sound, fast functionality, and easy serviceability,” and so the MERC-1™ OTF was born.
Greg Medford, founder of Medford Knife and Tool, is an American craftsman and patriot from Arizona. His Greek-Irish roots and values instilled in him by his family, such as pragmatism and hard work shaped his path as an innovative designer. As a former Marine, pilot and martial arts master, Greg combines American pragmatism, freedom and advanced technology in his designs. CPM S45VN – an American martensitic high-alloy stainless steel with a hardness of 59-61 HRC, one of the best blade steels. Designed to provide better strength compared to CPM S30V, while keeping corrosion resistance at the highest level. Produced by US Crucible Industries using the particle metallurgy / Crucible® Particle Metallurgy(CPM) method. The CPM process creates a very homogeneous, high-quality steel with excellent dimensional stability, grindability and ductility compared to steels produced by conventional methods. The chemical composition has been balanced so that it is composed of 0.5% niobium carbides (Nb) along with 3.0% vanadium (V) and 14.0%chromium (Cr) carbides. The improved strength of CPM S45VN also provides better resistance to edge chipping.
Blade – machine ground, extremely sharp D/E type (Double Edge Dagger), sharpened on both sides, with double grain grooves. Finished with a scratch-masking Tumbled method . The handcrafted blade is derived with a high flat grind (Flat Grind), providing excellent cutting properties. As a result, the knife has excellent piercing properties while maintaining its strength. The strong mechanism of extending / retracting the blade with the help of the moled Thumb Slide, a stepped thumb slide requires for safety the application of a specific force to overcome the resistance of the spring. The method of opening provides seamless opening for both right and left-handed people.
Handle – made with excellent precision in 3D technology on CNC milling machines, from 6061-T6 aluminum . The slight curve of the Handle, as well as the notches and deep engraving of the crossbow on both sides, in addition to visual qualities, improve the grip characteristics. The milled two-position (right/left) solid deep carry clip , allow the knife to be carried discreetly in the pocket, in tip-down position (tip of the blade down). The clip features the company’s logo. Handle is finished with glass breaker, a solid steel triangle, into which a tungsten carbide ball has been pressed.
Included – cardboard packaging, nylon pouch, company patch with Velcro attachment and signed “Certificate of Creation and Authenticity”.
